17 temples, shrines, and castles are registered as Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto in the category of cultural World Heritage Sites. (This includes one site partially located in Shiga Prefecture.)

One of the world's leading travel magazines "Travel + Leisure" conducted a reader survey to rank the "World's Best City". Since 2012, Kyoto has been highly ranked and was ranked #1 for two years in a row in 2014 and 2015.
