How can I rent a room in Japan? Moving abroad can be tricky—and there can be many new and unfamiliar rules to follow and boxes to check. This is often all the more true of students, for whom study abroad can be your first time living alone. On top of this, the Japanese rent system can be a little complicated…what is key money? A guarantor? Thank you money? While these are standard practice in much of Japan, they’re fees that are unfamiliar in many countries.

Not only in Kyoto, but in many parts of Japan, there are unfortunately some restrictions placed upon international students seeking to rent. The listings on the housing search site above, however, are all posted with permission by their landlords with the intent to welcome foreign students, so you can search without worry.
